BMO CENTRE PAVILION LIGHTS
An impressive pavilion lighting show welcomes visitors to Western Canada's largest convention centre
Our Approach
Heavy was approached to help design and fabricate the pavilion lighting feature at the entrance to the newly expanded BMO convention centre. The challenge was to create 1,500 unique lighting soffits with openings to light up at night, but were imperceptible in the daytime.
The Opportunity
This feature represents a number of themes from Calgary’s western heritage and the stampede itself. The use of blackened steel played on the history of blacksmiths and campfires and the rugged aesthetic of the times.
One of the biggest challenges was actually not the paneling systems themselves, but the backing structure to support them all. We collaborated with our partners to develop a system to take stock structural support members and cut them in such a way that we could bend them to all the different angles required in this complex feature.
